The coast around Sucuraj has bays that no road reaches. A boat for the day is the simplest way to see them, and it costs less than most people expect.
What the hire includes
We can arrange a five-metre boat for 125 euros a day, fuel included. No licence is needed for it, which surprises most guests. If you would rather not drive, a skipper can be arranged at extra cost.
Ask us when you book, or on the day you arrive. In July and August it is worth deciding early, because the boats get taken.
Where to go
Perna Bay is the usual first stop. It has a sandy bottom, clear water and a secluded feel, and it is reached by boat rather than by road. Snorkelling there is the best around Sucuraj.
Beyond Perna, the coastline east and west of the town is a run of small coves. Most have nobody in them on a weekday. Take the boat slowly along the shore and stop where the water looks right.
A day at sea, planned properly
The sea here is usually calm in the morning and picks up in the afternoon, so leave early and come back for lunch or a late siesta. What to bring:
- Water, more than you think. There is nowhere to buy it in the bays.
- Sun cream and a hat. The canopy helps, but the reflection off the water does not care.
- Snorkelling gear, which we provide.
- A dry bag for phones and keys.
- Lunch from the village, or plan to eat at Mlaska.
Check the forecast the evening before. The wind matters more than the sun for a day like this.
Organised excursions
If you would rather someone else drives, boat excursions run through the summer. There are trips to Korcula on Thursdays, and daily crossings to Trpanj on the Peljesac peninsula.
Trpanj is the easy one: a short crossing, a small harbour, lunch, and back the same afternoon. Korcula is a full day and better suited to older children.
Watching the channel from the garden
You do not have to go anywhere to enjoy this part of the coast. The house sits at the highest point in town, looking over the marina towards Peljesac and the mainland. The boats crossing the channel are the whole afternoon’s entertainment on a slow day.
Most guests take the boat once and then spend the rest of the week deciding whether to do it again. Usually they do.
