Sucuraj sits at the eastern tip of Hvar, and the sea is never far. From Villa Palma you can walk to the first swimming spot in about five minutes, and reach three more within a few kilometres. Here is how they differ, so you can pick the one that suits the day.
Bilina Beach, the five-minute walk
Bilina is the closest to us. It is pebble and rock, with shallow rock pools along the edge where small children spend whole mornings. The water is clear enough to see the bottom, and the rocky sections are good for snorkelling.
It is rarely crowded, even in August. Bring water shoes for the rocks, and a bit of shade if you plan to stay past midday, because there are no sunbeds or parasols for hire.
Cesminica Beach, easy for small children
Cesminica is 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the village. It is pebble at the shore with a sandy shallow bottom, which makes the entry gentle for children who are still finding their confidence in the sea.
There is a coffee shop nearby, so it works well for a longer morning: swim, coffee, swim again, and back for lunch.
Mlaska Bay, worth the four kilometres
Mlaska is about four kilometres away. You can drive, or take one of the two bicycles we keep at the house. The bay has sand and pebbles, a shallow bottom, parking close by and a small restaurant on the beach.
This is the one to choose when you want a full day out without going far. Families tend to stay from late morning until the light softens in the afternoon.
Perna Bay, reached by boat
Perna is the reward for a day on the water. It has a sandy bottom and a secluded feel, and it is reached by small boat rather than by road. Swimming and snorkelling here are the best of the four.
We can arrange boat hire for the day, currently 125 euros including fuel. No licence is needed, and a skipper can be arranged at extra cost if you would rather not drive yourself.
What to bring
The beaches here are natural, not serviced. That is part of why they stay quiet, and it means you should plan a little:
- Water shoes for the pebble and rock entries.
- Shade, since there is little of it at Bilina and Perna.
- Snorkelling gear, or ask us for ours. Beach gear is free for guests.
- Water and snacks, because only Mlaska and Cesminica have somewhere to buy them.
Which one to choose
If you have young children, start with Cesminica for the shallow sandy entry and keep Bilina for the rock pools. If you want a day out with lunch included, go to Mlaska. If you want the sea to yourself, take the boat to Perna.
Whichever you pick, the walk home is short and the garden is waiting.
